In this new entry in our ‘Diamonds In The Rough’ category, we would like to introduce you to upcoming artist KING L(a^3)ZY and his brand new EP titled The 6Ix, Vol. 1.
Emerging South African artist King L(a^3)ZY has officially released his powerful new EP, The 6Ix, Vol. 1, a gripping six-track hip-hop project that places his hometown of Maokeng at the center of the story. Now available on all major streaming platforms, the EP is a raw, vivid, and deeply personal introduction to a township outside Kroonstad that locals proudly refer to as “the 6.”
More than just a project, The 6Ix, Vol. 1 is both a tribute and a confrontation; a love letter written with clenched teeth. Across six songs, King L(a^3)ZY explores the history, origins, slang, and spirit of Maokeng, capturing the complicated emotional reality of growing up in a place you may love deeply while also wanting to escape. It’s a story that will instantly resonate with listeners familiar with township life, where joy is not something easily found, but something people actively create in order to survive.
At its core, the EP is driven by honesty. King L(a^3)ZY doesn’t romanticize struggle, but he doesn’t deny the humor that often lives inside it either. He explains that the project began during a period of homesickness, when he found himself revisiting music that reminded him of home and identity, including the storytelling mastery of Good Kid, M.A.A.D City. Initially, he started writing playful, light-hearted observations about township life. But as the writing continued, the humor turned into reflection, and the reflection turned darker.
Soon, he was asking uncomfortable questions: “Why do certain painful realities feel normal? Why do people laugh at things that hurt? And why do certain cycles continue even when everyone knows they’re destructive?”
That tension, between laughter and trauma, pride and frustration, becomes the heartbeat of The 6Ix, Vol. 1.
Sonically, the project is equally bold. King L(a^3)ZY fuses classic hip-hop storytelling with a modern, experimental edge, blending Sotho language flows over trap drums, layered with Yeat-inspired synths and heavy use of autotune, while still maintaining sharp lyrical structure and vivid imagery. The EP carries a creative unpredictability that evokes comparisons to MF DOOM’s King Geedorah-era inventiveness, while still remaining rooted in the rhythms and realities of South Africa.
Adding to its authenticity is the way the EP was created. Much of The 6Ix, Vol. 1 was recorded in a humble backroom studio setup, simply a laptop and microphone, inside a shack in Site 5, Masiphumelele, Cape Town. That stripped-down environment doesn’t limit the project; it strengthens it, giving the music a grounded texture that feels lived-in rather than polished for comfort.
The EP features production contributions from Thabo Dlezi (Naivo Beats), Ridge E, Makwa, and Zoey T, creating a dynamic soundscape that shifts between gritty realism, futuristic energy, and emotional depth.
To expand the world of the EP even further, the release is also paired with an upcoming short film titled the6 :part 1, part 2 & part 3, featuring the first three tracks from the project. The film promises to bring the EP’s themes to life visually, offering a voice to communities like Maokeng, not as an outsider’s commentary, but as an insider’s truth. King L(a^3)ZY aims to make those who grew up in environments like “the 6” feel seen, while giving outsiders a direct window into a world where hardship is normal and where realizing that it shouldn’t be normal adds another layer of emotional weight.
Born Teboho Fokane in Kroonstad, King L(a^3)ZY has steadily built a reputation as an artist unafraid of contradiction. His discography is marked by emotional honesty and boundary-pushing themes, from early SoundCloud work like MDC (Momma’s Disabled Children) and Unfinished Songs and Stolen Poetry, to the provocative Porn Radio series and the introspective Do I Really Mean It (Killed a Man)? Each release adds to an evolving catalogue that blurs the line between vulnerability and rebellion, documenting life in a way that is messy, human, and unfiltered.
With influences ranging from Kanye West, Tyler, The Creator, and Kendrick Lamar, King L(a^3)ZY brings a fearless creative approach to South African hip-hop, one that’s rooted in culture, shaped by gospel and local tradition, but unafraid to experiment with global sounds.
Ultimately, The 6Ix, Vol. 1 is not just a debut statement, it’s an announcement.
It’s Maokeng’s story told with humor, pain, and pride. It’s township life presented without pity or polish. And it’s the sound of an artist turning homesickness into something bigger than nostalgia: a living, breathing world that listeners can step into.
