Death Cab for Cutie have unveiled their latest single, ‘Stone Over Water’, offering fans one final glimpse into their forthcoming album I Built You A Tower, which arrives this Friday (June 5) via ANTI- Records.
The track follows a string of previews from the band’s highly anticipated 11th studio album and arrives just days before the record’s release. Speaking about the song, the band described ‘Stone Over Water’ as “a song about trying to convince everyone around you and most importantly, yourself, that you are okay when you definitely are not.”
The release caps off a busy week for the indie rock veterans, who also appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to perform album lead single ‘Riptides’. The song recently became the band’s ninth number one on the Billboard Adult Alternative Airplay chart, further cementing their status as one of alternative rock’s most enduring acts.

Consisting of Benjamin Gibbard, Nicholas Harmer, Jason McGerr, Dave Depper and Zac Rae, Death Cab for Cutie are preparing to enter a new chapter with I Built You A Tower. The album marks the band’s first release since leaving Atlantic Records after a two-decade relationship, returning instead to their independent roots.
Produced and engineered by John Congleton, the record was assembled in just three weeks of recording sessions split between Los Angeles and the band members’ homes across the Pacific Northwest. While the quick turnaround may suggest spontaneity, the emotional weight behind the album has been years in the making.
The seeds of I Built You A Tower were planted during Death Cab’s recent anniversary tours celebrating landmark albums Transatlanticism and Plans. Those sold-out runs saw frontman Benjamin Gibbard pulling double duty by performing extensive sets with both Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service each night, while simultaneously navigating major personal upheaval away from the stage.
Reflecting on the album’s central theme, Gibbard explained that the titular “tower” became a metaphorical space for containing grief and loss.
“There’s this need to find a place in ourselves to put loss and grief,” he said. “A place that can hold it so we can move on with our lives. But there are these moments where the trauma breaks out of that shell we created for it.”

Rather than serving as a nostalgia-driven return to earlier sounds, the band describe the album as a rediscovery of the creative instincts that first defined them nearly three decades ago. Guitarist Dave Depper noted that revisiting the material that built their reputation ultimately freed them from looking backwards, while bassist Nicholas Harmer said the recording process restored confidence in following their instincts without external expectations.
Early reactions suggest the approach has paid off. In a positive review, Pitchfork described the album as an embrace of Death Cab’s earlier strengths, praising its emotionally direct songwriting, memorable hooks and renewed sense of confidence.
Following the album’s release, Death Cab for Cutie will head to the UK and Europe this autumn for a run of headline dates. The tour begins in Dublin on September 16 before visiting Manchester, Edinburgh, Gateshead, Bristol and London, with Pool Kids joining as support across all dates.
