SCARECROW is a hard-rock band founded in 1989 by writer, producer, and lead vocalist John Blaze, whose gritty voice and theatrical vision helped shape the band’s distinctive sound and image. Emerging during the final wave of the late-80s hard rock era, SCARECROW quickly developed a reputation for powerful live performances and a dramatic stage presence that blended raw rock energy with a darker, almost cinematic storytelling style.

The original lineup featured Jim Harris on drums, Rickie Panzica (Rick Anthony) on bass, and Eddie Ojeda—known for his work with Twisted Sister—on guitar. From the beginning, Blaze embraced a raspy, aggressive vocal tone that perfectly matched the band’s pounding instrumentation and helped create the gritty identity that fans would come to associate with SCARECROW.

    The Early Years

SCARECROW made their explosive debut in September 1989 at the legendary Sundance nightclub on Long Island, immediately captivating audiences. Their performance generated a strong following almost overnight. The venue’s owner, Frank Cariola, became an early supporter, recognizing the band’s potential and helping fuel the growing buzz around their shows.

Throughout the early 1990s, SCARECROW recorded and toured extensively. The band eventually signed with Redlight Records in Illinois, releasing their debut album featuring a collection of powerful hard-rock tracks produced by Blaze himself. The release gained attention domestically and internationally, even reaching audiences as far as Japan.

    Evolution and Line-Up Changes

Like many rock bands navigating the changing music landscape of the 1990s, SCARECROW experienced several lineup shifts. Guitarist Jimmy Quinn joined the band, expanding the sound with a second guitar. Later, drummer Bobby Marks, known for his work with Humble Pie, joined the lineup. During this time, Eddie Ojeda returned to the spotlight with Twisted Sister while SCARECROW continued its journey with Quinn on guitar.

Despite these changes, the band remained committed to recording and performing, building a loyal fan base and refining its hard-rock style while keeping the dramatic intensity that defined their early years.

    A Theatrical Reinvention

In the 2020s, John Blaze expanded the SCARECROW concept beyond music, creating a theatrical stage production titled “I AM SCARECROW.” The show incorporated storytelling, music, and Blaze’s signature stage makeup to bring the darker persona of the SCARECROW character to life.

To celebrate the band’s legacy, Blaze released a compilation album, “Best of SCARECROW,” marking two decades of music. The project featured performances by notable musicians including guitarist George Cintron, drummer John Miceli, and bassist Danny Miranda—who has performed with Queen alongside Brian May and Paul Rodgers.

    The New Era — “Twisted”

In 2026, SCARECROW entered a new chapter with the release of “Twisted,” one of the most ambitious tracks of Blaze’s career. Inspired by his long-standing friendship with Dee Snider and the legacy of Twisted Sister, the song delivers a modern, radio-ready rock sound while staying true to the band’s heavy roots.

The track features Dee Snider providing powerful guest vocals during the climactic second verse and chorus. Additional contributions include violin work by Mark Wood of Trans-Siberian Orchestra, lead guitar by TJ Jordan, and drums by Bobby Marks. The single is available across major streaming platforms, including Spotify and iTunes, with a music video planned to support live performances in 2026.

    The Legacy

Across decades of evolution, SCARECROW has remained driven by John Blaze’s vision of blending hard rock, theatrical storytelling, and relentless musical energy. From underground clubs on Long Island to international releases and theatrical productions, the band continues to push forward.

SCARECROW — the best is yet to come.
