We’re getting there: no more equal placings. This week, we reach the Top 4, and the second entry from The Band is 4th.From their iconic debut album Music From Big Pink, The Weight is one of the most iconic songs in americana music. Remarkable when you think that The Band (and in their earlier guise of The Hawks) were considered a rock band, until their work with Bob Dylan and then with their own albums as they introduced elements of country, soul, folk rock, and R’n’B into a homogeneous whole that came to be known as americana. Richard Parkinson noted:…

Sometimes you’ve got your headphones on listening to an album and you get lost in what you’re doing. The album finishes and helpfully (or not) the algorithm has a few songs lined up for you to listen to next. Most of the time, they’re not really what you’re looking for or what you’re into. Sometimes they’re good, and you enjoy them but then move on with your life. However, sometimes everything lines up perfectly and you get a song suggested by the musical algorithm overlords that hits you just right, gets its claws in, and you have to stop and…

Head Automatica have announced a short U.S. headline tour. The returning band – Daryl Palumbo and Dan The Automator, plus original guitarist Craig Bonich, Glassjaw drummer Chad Hasty and collaborator Richard Flesh – will kick things off at Barboza in Seattle on June 1 and wrap up at Denver’s Marquis 10 days later, with another one-off show planned a few months after that at Meadowlands, New Jersey’s Bolero Block Party. If that’s not enough, a press release revealing the tour also confirms that they’ve been working on new music, and in fact, the follow-up to 2004’s Decadence and 2006’s Popaganda…
Photo by Alexander CasonFrom the fan favourite album Recovering the Satellites, this song was highly rated across the board, clearly striking a chord with writers (5 of whom voted for it), as its themes of regret and heartbreak melded with a sad optimism for the future; it resonated not only at its time of release but also towards the end of the COVID pandemic, when writer Adam Duritz performed a live version of the song on The Jimmy Kimmel show at the end in late 2021, and resonates still today at the end of/during a difficult period for many. Duritz…
It was scary when we were getting death threats over social media. After angering the far right by pretending to murder Donald Trump, alien monster metallers Gwar couldnt believe people were trying to censor them
Last year, alien monster metal thrashers Gwar made unexpected headlines after they received a ton of hate from right wing Twitter for performing an on-stage skit at Riot Fest, in which they brutally ‘murdered’ standing US President Donald Trump, appearing to disembowel a caricatured version of him as blood sprayed over their audience.Videos of the performance went viral over social media, with high profile, reactionary far right account Libs Of Tiktok claiming that Gwar were “promoting violence”, even going so far as to label it “incitement”. Other Twitter users suggested that Gwar should be banned from performing, seemingly missing the…
Michigan is back on top of college basketball. The Wolverines secured their first NCAA men’s championship since 1989 with a 69–63 victory over UConn in Indianapolis, earning just the second national title in program history. The win also ended a lengthy drought for the Big Ten, which hadn’t celebrated a champion since 2000. Despite entering the title game on a historic scoring run—putting up at least 90 points in each of their first five tournament games—Michigan found itself in a much tougher, defensive battle. Neither team shot efficiently, with both finishing under 40% from the field and combining for a…
Three films. Seven years. A trajectory that almost no horror director has matched. $3.4 million. $147 million. The Mummy opens April 17. That’s the career so far. Most directors spend a decade building to numbers like Evil Dead Rise. Cronin got there in four years, from a modest Irish debut that almost nobody saw in cinemas to the highest-grossing film in a franchise that Sam Raimi built from $375,000 and sheer audacity in 1981. The question now is whether The Mummy is the next step — or whether it reveals that Evil Dead Rise was the ceiling. The Hole in…
Dead Star Boys: Rats (Dead Star Boys) Released 13 April 2026 CD | DL 4.0 out of 5.0 stars4.0 Power chords and psychotic reactions: there’s a nervous tension at the heart of the Medway, and Dead Star Boys have got it perfectly sussed. Rats, their second album, works like a distillation of our disturbed times. Robert Plummer thrives on the pressure. “We’re the Dead Star Boys/Heard them say we’re paranoid,” sings vocalist and bass player Viv Tucker in the defining moment of the Medway trio’s tough-as-nails sophomore release. Can’t think why that might be, Viv – maybe they’ve been paying…
Antoine Fuqua has been making films since 1998. He is not a director who gets talked about in the same breath as Scorsese or Villeneuve. Critics have been inconsistent with him. Audiences have been more loyal. And the numbers — across nearly three decades of action cinema — tell a story of quiet, sustained commercial reliability that most directors would accept without complaint. He started directing music videos. Gangsta’s Paradise by Coolio. The Most Beautiful Girl in the World by Prince. For Your Love by Stevie Wonder. He learned how to make an image mean something in thirty seconds before…
Photo: Jim HerringtonThis will be the last article for a while if all goes to plan and I actually get to go on my hols to sunny Spain. Picked a great year to decide to drive all the way round the edge of the entire country, it seems. Barring fuel rationing, we’ll be tootling around for the best part of three weeks. Been looking forward to this for ages. If the demented man in the White House hasn’t f**ked it up for us, I’ll be amazed, but as I’ve often said in this column, ours are first-world problems. If we…
